Renunciation of Romanian Citizenship
Renunciation of Romanian citizenship is approved by the National Citizenship Authority under art. 27 of Law no. 21/1991. We take over the entire procedure under a special power of attorney, with no need for you to travel to Romania. We verify your eligibility before you incur any cost.
Overview
Renunciation applications are rarely refused on the merits. They are refused on administrative detail: an unpaid fine, an outstanding local tax, or a marriage never registered in the Romanian records.
The law requires several conditions to be met together: you must be 18 or over, hold another citizenship or a written guarantee that it will be granted, have no outstanding debts towards the Romanian state or towards natural or legal persons in Romania, and be free of pending criminal proceedings or unserved sentences.
That is why we begin with the eligibility check. We query your fiscal position with ANAF and the local budget, obtain your criminal record certificate, and verify that your civil status records are consistent. Only once the file stands up do we draft the application and file it with the authority, paying the state fee on your behalf.
The procedure runs under a special power of attorney, which we draft for you. It can be executed before a Romanian notary, at the Romanian diplomatic mission in your country of residence, or before a local notary followed by an apostille.
The estimated duration is 8 to 12 months from the filing of a complete file. We report the status every 60 days and answer the authority's requests on your behalf. At the end you receive the certificate of renunciation and the approval order, apostilled and, on request, translated, together with all your original documents.
